Raised in Orangeburg, South Carolina, William Franklin Hickson III grew up in a close-knit, middle-class African-American community where football was more than just a game—it was a way of life. Whether cheering from the stands, watching games on television, or competing in the neighborhood's beloved Front Yard Football League (FYFL), the sport became the foundation of his character. As one of the first African-American athletes to participate in the Orangeburg Recreation Department's youth sports programs, he learned enduring lessons in teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and respect.
