World War I drew countless men away, forcing women to adapt to their sudden absence and the upheaval it caused. Iowa schoolteacher Ina Marie Martin became one of the many lives deeply affected by this turbulent era. Like soldiers who returned home wounded in body or spirit, she too needed healing—a chance to recover and to avoid becoming an outcast in a society quick to judge.
Fleeing shame and seeking renewal, Ina Marie leaves the mainland behind and begins a new life on the Island of Hawaii. There, she attempts to rebuild herself amid a world still shaped by uncertainty and change. Beyond the war itself, the period was marked by widespread hardship: the influenza epidemic, Prohibition, shortages of food and clothing, limited rights for women, and pervasive racial and ethnic persecution.
As Ina Marie navigates these challenges, she is forced to confront not only the realities of her time but also her own resilience. Her journey becomes one of survival, self-discovery, and quiet strength as she maps out a new existence in a world struggling to redefine itself.
